Utilização de melancia na alimentação de novilhos

| dc.description.abstract | A Campina de Idanha é uma das zonas do país onde mais se produz melancia (Citrullus lanatus). Por vezes, devido ao excesso de produção ou devido à falta de qualidade de alguns frutos, a melancia produzida não tem valor comercial podendo ter como destino a alimentação animal. Neste trabalho caracteriza-se o fruto do ponto de vista nutricional e avalia-se o seu interesse para a alimentação de novilhos. A melancia apresenta elevados teores em PB (14,47% ±4,54) e em NFC (53,80% ±8,89). No entanto, devido aos baixos teores em MS (3,8% ±1,62), NDF (20,63% ±2,80) e ADF (18,39% ±2,93) a melancia só deverá ser utilizada na alimentação de ruminantes se associada à ingestão de alimentos forrageiros secos com o objetivo de aumentar os teores em MS, NDF e ADF para valores ≥40%, ≥40% e ≥21%, respetivamente. Na mistura, o NFC deverá ser ≤36%. Utilizando a técnica do Quadrado de Pearson, acertámos duas misturas para 45% de MS, 53,9% melancia + 46,1% palha de trigo (9,05MJ/kgMS, 9,39%PB, 46,93%NDF, 30,78%ADF e 33,97%NFC) e 54,3% melancia + 45,7% feno de aveia (9,82MJ/kgMS, 11,30%PB, 41,06%NDF, 27,33%ADF e 38,45%NFC). Quando alimentado com a primeira mistura, o GPD esperado para um novilho com o peso vivo inicial de 300kg é de 0,479kg/dia e quando alimentado com a segunda mistura o GPD esperado é de 0,647kg/dia. Conclui-se que a melancia poderá ser utilizada na alimentação de novilhos. No entanto, se complementada só com uma forragem seca, apenas permitirá GPD inferiores a 0,7kg/dia. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | WATERMELON AS FEED FOR STEERS ABSTRACT The Campina de Idanha is one of the Portuguese regions where is produced more quantity of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). Sometimes, due to excess of production or due to lack of quality of some fruits, the produced watermelon may not have commercial value. In this case, this production will be used as animal feed. In this paper we characterize watermelon fruit's from the nutritional point of view and evaluated their interest as feed for steers. Watermelon has a high crude protein (CP) (14.47% ±4.54) and high non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) (53.80 ±8.89%) concentration. However, due to the low dry matter (DM) content (3.8 ±1.62%), NDF (20.63 ±2.80%) and ADF (18.39% ±2.93), watermelon should be used as ruminant feed only with dry forage. The goal is to increase the levels of DM, NDF and ADF values to ≥40%, ≥40% and ≥21%, respectively. In the mixed feed, the NFC should be ≤36%. Using the Pearson square ration formulation procedure, we obtained two 45% DM mixtures, 53.9% watermelon + 46.1% wheat straw (9.05MJ/kgDM, 9.39%CP, 46.93%NDF, 30.78%ADF and 33.97%NFC) and 54.3% watermelon + 45.7% oat hay (9.82 MJ/kgDM, 11.30%CP, 41.06%NDF, 27.33%ADF and 38.45%NFC). The daily weigh gain expected for 300kg steer is 0.479kg/day when fed with the first mixture, and 0.647kg/day when fed with the second mixture. It is concluded that watermelon may be used for feeding steers. However, if supplemented only with dry forage the daily weigh gain will be lower than 0.7 kg/day.
