- Creation of a vehicular delay-tolerant network prototypePublication . Dias, João A.; Isento, João N.; Silva, Bruno M.; Soares, V.N.G.J.; Ferreira, Paulo S.; Nogueira, António M.D.; Rodrigues, JoelVehicular Delay-Tolerant Network (VDTN) is a new disruptive network architecture where vehicles act as the communication infrastructure. VDTN follows a layered architecture based on control and data planes separation, and positioning the bundle layer under the network layer. VDTN furnishes low-cost asynchronous communications coping with intermittent and sparse connectivity, variable delays and even no end-to-end connection. This paper presents a VDTN prototype (testbed) proposal, which implements and validates the VDTN layered architecture considering the proposed out-of-band signaling. The main goals of the prototype are emulation, demonstration, performance evaluation, and diagnose of protocol stacks and services, proving the applicability of VDTNs over a wide range of environments.
- Impact of content storage and retrieval mechanisms on the performance of vehicular delay-tolerant networksPublication . Silva, Bruno M.; Soares, V.N.G.J.; Proença Jr., Mário L.; Rodrigues, JoelVehicular Delay-Tolerant Networking (VDTN) is a new disruptive network architecture based on the concept of delay tolerant networks (DTNs). VDTNs handle non-real time applications using vehicles to carry messages on their buffers, relaying them only when a proper contact opportunity occurs. Therefore, the network performance is directly affected by the storage capacity and message retrieving of intermediate nodes. This paper proposes a suitable content storage and retrieval (CSR) mechanism for VDTN networks. This CSR solution adds additional information on control labels of the setup message associated to the corresponding data bundle (aggregated traffic) that defines and applies caching and forwarding restrictions on network traffic (data bundles). Furthermore, this work presents a performance analysis and evaluation of CSR mechanisms over a VDTN application scenario, using a VDTN testbed. This work presents the comparison of the network behavior and performance using two DTN routing protocols, Epidemic and Spray and Wait, with and without CSR mechanisms. The results show that CSR mechanisms improve the performance of VDTN networks significantly.
- MP-Collaborator: a mobile collaboration tool in pervasive environmentPublication . There is a need for mobile collaboration tools that allow efficient collaboration among staff in organization which may be located in different geographical areas and time zones. Mobile and pervasive computing provides easy and convenient access to information, enabling effective collaboration. This paper describes a context and location-aware mobile application, called MP-Collaborator, created to improve and optimize the communication between collaborators in any organization. MP- Collaborator draws information from location, user status and Pocket Outlook Calendar to create a user availability profile, which is published to any other user in the network. Based on availability status, the user can be reached using a simple phone call or a message. Through the opportunistic use of available mobile technologies MP-Collaborator provides a simple but critical service - user presence service. The proposed solution is validated both in terms of features and communication through a series of experiments on real devices through Wi-Fi network.
- Solutions for vehicular communications: a reviewPublication . Soares, V.N.G.J.; Isento, João N.; Dias, João A.; Silva, Bruno M.; Rodrigues, JoelVehicular networks experience a number of unique challenges due to the high mobility of vehicles and highly dynamic network topology, short contact durations, disruption intermittent connectivity, significant loss rates, node density, and frequent network fragmentation. All these issues have a profound impact on routing strategies in these networks. This paper gives an insight about available solutions on related literature for vehicular communications. It overviews and compares the most relevant approaches for data communication in these networks, discussing their influence on routing strategies. It intends to stimulate research and contribute to further advances in this rapidly evolving area where many key open issues that still remain to be addressed are identified.
