- The use of technology in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy: Trends and open issuesPublication . Fernandes, J.; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Menino, Eva; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Soares, V.N.G.J.Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in the world, affecting millions of people. The impact of this disease goes beyond seizures. It has repercussions on the individual’s health and quality of life (i.e., neurological, psychological, and physical consequences) and social inclusion. This article presents a review of the literature and discusses the technological and scientific advances in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. It begins by introducing the related concepts, then analyzes the different technological approaches, exposing their strengths and limitations, and concludes by identifying challenges and open problems for future research.
- Road pavement damage detection using computer vision techniques: Approaches, challenges and opportunitiesPublication .
- Power saving MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks: a surveyPublication . Cotrim, Rafael; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Soares, V.N.G.J.; Azzoug, YoucefIn a wireless sensor network, energy is almost always the greatest limitation. Energy sources are restricted in many of the environments where nodes are deployed, limiting them to the use of batteries for power. Therefore, conserving energy is supremely important, however, such a task poses many challenges to hardware and protocol design. One of the greatest problems faced is reducing the energy consumption of the communications systems, which represents a substantial amount of the total consumption. This paper surveys the most recent schemes designed to reduce the communications module energy consumption with a focus on novel MAC protocols for ad-hoc wireless sensor networks. It initially describes the many challenges involved, then it analyses each protocol individually. Finally, the presented protocols are compared and the issues that remain open are raised for further research.
- Livestock monitoring: approaches, challenges and opportunitiesPublication . Aleluia, Vitor M.T.; Soares, V.N.G.J.; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Rodrigues, A.M.This survey presents approaches and technologies for livestock identification, vital signs monitoring and location tracking. It first introduces the related concepts. Then, provides an analysis of existing solutions and highlights their strengths and limitations. Finally, it presents key challenges in the field, and discusses recent trends that must be factored in by researchers, implementers, and manufacturers towards future developments in the area.
- Bird deterrent solutions for crop protection: approaches, challenges, and opportunitiesPublication . Micaelo, Eduardo B.; Lourenço, Leonardo G.P.S.; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Soares, V.N.G J.Weeds, pathogens, and animal pests are among the pests that pose a threat to the productivity of crops meant for human consumption. Bird-caused crop losses pose a serious and costly challenge for farmers. This work presents a survey on bird deterrent solutions for crop protection. It first introduces the related concepts. Then, it provides an extensive review and categorization of existing methods, techniques, and related studies. Further, their strengths and limitations are discussed. Based on this review, current gaps are identified, and strategies for future research are proposed.
- Smart lockers: approaches, challenges and opportunitiesPublication . Luís, Alícia F.S.; Martins, Gonçalo M.C.; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Soares, V.N.G.J.This survey focuses on the benefits of smart lockers and their potential contribution in the last mile problem. It first introduces the related concepts. Then, categorizes existing solutions and identifies the similarities and differences. Further, their strengths and limitations are discussed. Finally, it presents key challenges in the field, and discusses envisionedfuture research directions that mustbe factored in by researchers, implementers, and manufacturers to increase the acceptance of smart lockers and to improve their security.
