Abstract(s)
Abstract: This is an academic work developed, under the guidance of Professor Isabel Lourenço within the first Master’s degree in Palliative Care, at Dr. Lopes Dias Portuguese Higher Education School of Health. Its main theme is the human dignity in the end-of-life patient’s perspective in an acute hospital. The work is structured in two parts: the first part is described in summary form the model of organization and operation of services and palliative care teams, and identifies the skills acquired in the key areas of palliative care; in the second part of the presentation of the research work and describes the project intervention / training. The services of palliative care concern customization and individualization of patient care in end-of-life, in order to meet the important needs. Cautions should be developed in order to preserve the dignity of the patient in palliative care. What defines dignity for every patient and family is unique and personal, and this should be considered by health professionals to enable them to provide quality care. The true meaning of care ensures dignity until the end-of-life in order to preserve individuality, respect and care for the sick person and their vulnerable situation The fieldwork aims to know the concept of human dignity, by the patient in hospital for acute, and this was maintained throughout the hospitalization. We performed a semi-structured interview to a total of six patients, finding: three admitted to a palliative care service and three patients in the orthopedics service. The purpose of this research field is whether there are similarities or differences in the responses of patients admitted in completely different services and that the purpose of the hospital is also distinctive.
