Abstract(s)

This article presents some results of the experimental monotonic bending tests on the behaviour of the tubular columns show a privileged structural behaviour when compared with other steel shapes, due to their ability to withstand axial loads, bending in several directions and torsion, besides considerable advantages in terms of maintenance and aesthetics. The characteristics of the nonlinear cyclic behaviour of the steel joints between tubular columns and I profile beams, with welded reverse channel, is the principal purpose of the investigation presented, based on experimental tests, that allow correlate the parameters considered with the structural behaviour of the joint, defined by the resistance, the stiffness, and the rotation capability. The use of the welded reverse channel in the connection is a good solution since it allows the bolted joint between tubular and I profiles, has a reasonable construction cost, is easy to implement and possesses large ductility through the deformation of the channel web panel. The main components of the joint that should be considered is: the chord face yielding in bending, the chord side wall yielding, crushing or instability, under the compression brace member and the chord in shear, in respect to the columns, and the web face of the channel in bending and the flanges panels in shear, compression, and tension, related to the reverse channel. This article present some results of the experimental tests, effected based on a parametric variation of the most significant characteristics of the tubular profiles. The parameters considered are the thicknesses and the widths of the tubular columns faces, the filling with concrete and the axial load.
