dc.description.abstractThe relationship between Design and Engineering has not its genesis in the 20th century. But it was in this century that the advantage of this association was perceived and came into existence. From the beginning of mass production in the early twentieth century came the need for bringing the two disciplines together: Design and Engineering.Although Design and Engineering are two separate and independent disciplines, much of their applied field overlaps. The automo-tive product design and industry is a common ground where Design and Engineering strive to achieve, together, a common final product: the automobile.This article aims to discuss how the development of the automobile throughout the 20th and 21st centuries was driven by Design and Engineering, opening the way for a deeper debate on the definition of this interaction.A definition for the Product Development methodology from the Engineering and De-sign point of view is described, as well as the role of the Design and Engineering disciplines within the automotive product development. Methodologically, a historically relevant case study in the development of the automobile product is presented.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractA relação entre o Design e a Engenharia não tem a sua génese no séc. XX. Mas foi nesse século que se percecionou as vantagem desta associação e sobretudo se concretizou. Foi então, a partir da fundação da produção em série, no inicio do século XX, que é criada a necessidade da aproximação das duas disciplinas: o Design e a Engenharia. Embora o Design e a Engenharia sejam duas disciplinas separadas e independentes, muito do seu campo aplicação se sobrepõe. O design de produto automóvel e a sua industrialização são um terreno comum onde Design e Engenharia se esforçam para alcançar, juntos, um produto final comum: o automóvel. Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir de que forma o desenvolvimento do automóvel ao longo do século XX e século XXI foi impulsionado pelo Design e pela Engenharia, abrindo caminho para um debate mais aprofundado sobre a definição desta interação. Uma definição para a metodologia de Desenvolvimento de Produto do ponto de vista da Engenharia e Design é descrita, bem como desenvolvido o papel das disciplinas de Design e Engenharia dentro do desenvolvimento do produto automóvel. Metodologicamente é apresentado um estudo de caso históricamente relevante no desenvolvimento do produto automóvel.pt_PT
