Abstract(s)
This report falls under the first Master in Palliative Care of the Escola Superior de Saúde Doutor Lopes Dias do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco and aims to obtain a Master's degree. In it are addressed primarily the clinical practice that was carried out in a Palliative Care Unit and an intervention project that took place in a Residential Structure for Senior Citizens. The clinical practice took place in a Palliative Care Unit of recognized quality, whose characteristics, type and level of differentiation are explained. This allowed me to experienced relevant and distinct clinical cases. Based on this clinical practice and using the reasoning through bibliography a critical reflection incident on the four key areas of palliative care was made: teamwork, communication, family support and symptom control. It was also addressed the role of physiotherapy in palliative care, especially in the Palliative Care Unit in which the practice took place. The framework of the theme "Older adults with chronic pain: physical therapy interventions under the Palliative Care" was made and the results of a literature review subject to the same theme were described, these results were later released with a poster presentation at a conference with the primary aim of raising awareness of the need to conduct further research into the role of physiotherapy in the context of palliative care. The intervention project, which held place in the Residential Structure for Seniors in which I work, was implemented in order to increase the assessment of pain intensity due to the perception that this was an aspect that could be improved, taking into account the benefits it could entail, engaging in various activities, including a workshop on assessment of pain intensity and in-service formation about pain and communication. The results of this project were positive, but it could have been even more. With this in mind i will try to give it continuity.
