O mundo contemporâneo, apesar das dificuldades conjunturais que a todos afectam, tem uma preocupação com o Património que não encontra paralelo com qualquer outra época da História.
O património ferroviário em Portugal tem, em nosso entender, a mais-valia fundamental de poder ser lido atendendo à vertente do património material e imaterial, o que nos obriga a ter uma visão integradora e generalizadora deste património. Neste sentido, o Museu Nacional Ferroviário tem um importante papel a desempenhar neste campo e uma responsabilidade cultural na divulgação de peças únicas, de que destacamos o Comboio Real, o Comboio Presidencial, ou a Locomotiva CP 02049, a locomotiva a vapor mais antiga da Península Ibérica. No Museu Nacional Ferroviário pretendemos contar a história dos caminhos-de-ferro nacionais, a par dos seus progressos no estrangeiro, mas também dos ferroviários que como grupo profissional reuniu esforços para desbravar o país e fazer chegar a modernidade.
ABSTRACT : The modern world, despite all of the economic difficulties it faces, has a deep concern for its Cultural Heritage, unparalelled throughout History. The railway heritage in Portugal has, in our opinion, the great advantage of being able to be read in its material and immaterial scope, allowing us to have a general and integrated vision of this heritage. With this in mind, the Museu Nacional Ferroviário has an important role to play, along with a cultural responsability to divulge unique pieces, specially where it concerns the rolling stock, from which it is important to highlight the Comboio Real, the Comboio Presidencial or the Locomotiva CP 02049, the oldest steam locomotive of the Iberian Peninsula. In the Museu Nacional Ferroviário we aim to tell the story of the national railways, with parallels to the progress abroad, and of the rail workers that came together to unite the country and bring forth the Modern Age
