Abstract(s)
Abstract: This report is done in the context of the 9th Master's Course in Palliative Care (PC) at the Escola Superior de SaĂșde Dr. Lopes Dias, of the Instituto PolitĂ©cnico de Castelo Branco. Finished after completing the professional internship of the course's curricular plan, this work is reflexive and aims to complete this course and, consequently, obtaining a Master's degree in CP. This work intends to respond to the objectives established by the course, which guided the development of clinical practice internship and the writing of the report. Within the scope of the intervention project of this report, a training need was identified in the Palliative Care Unit where I work, namely in the area of study of my interest: the impact on the family of the reduced oral intake in the patient in the last days and hours of life. Working in PC as a nurse, this area has always been very challenging for me and within the team, causing difficulties in communicating with families and some obstacles in the therapeutic relationship. After researching the literature on the subject and finishing the clinical practice internship, I planned and organized training sessions that targeted the health professionals at my workplace. Investment in training in PC is essential for the personal and professional development of those who work in this area, as it contributes to updating knowledge, which will provide better quality care to patients and families who are going through a period of health-disease transition, to which they must adjust as best as possible. It is known that, for families, the changes in hydration and nutrition resulting from the end-of-life process can impact them, as the reduced oral intake is a significant loss. This is a topic that needs further investigation to better understand how it impacts family members and how the health team can intervene.
