Abstract(s)
Abstract: Ageing and its biopsychosocial changes raise questions about the need to adjust societies in order to improve the means of support for older people. It is therefore essential to find strategies to promote dignified ageing, favouring the quality of life and well-being of older people. Institutionalisation represents a major change in the lives of older people, accentuating the experience of various losses such as their independence, privacy and individuality, among others. As far as rights are concerned, these are essential in an institutional context, as respecting and complying with them is a necessary condition for promoting quality gerontological care. The purpose of this Professional Internship Report is to contribute to a better understanding of the rights of institutionalised elderly people, identifying perceptions, challenges and strategies to guarantee the provision of care that ensures these rights. The plan was carried out in a Residential Centre for the Elderly in the municipality of Oleiros, in the district of Castelo Branco. The action research involved 35 institutionalised elderly people, 6 technicians, 3 direct action assistants and 15 relatives of the residents. An exploratory, mixed-methods study was carried out, using various data collection techniques such as field notes, direct and participatory observation, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, documentary analysis and content analysis. The results showed positive perceptions on the part of both residents and family members. However, the urgent need to improve the dissemination of residents' rights and adopt more humanised practices in the provision of care was highlighted, giving rise to a Manual of Good Practices for the realisation of the rights of institutionalised elderly people in Residential Facilities for the Elderly, with the aim of serving as a tool for implementation in institutional contexts, with a view to promoting and ensuring the realisation of the rights of institutionalised elderly people.
