Long Covid associated with insufficient physical activity level among older adults in the Federal District, Brazil

dc.description.abstractBackground: "Long COVID" is defined as a condition that arises three months after the onset of COVID-19, with symptoms lasting for at least two months and that cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis. The long-term effects can impact various body sys-tems, including the pulmonary, cardiovascular, and nervous systems, as well as having psychological impacts. Objective: To analyze the association between long COVID and insufficient physical activity levels in older adults. Methods: Epidemiological survey re-search with a cross-sectional design and a representative sample from the Federal District, Brazil. Data were collected through an electronic questionnaire. The variables analyzed were post COVID-19 sequelae (neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, mental) and insufficient physical activity level (≤ 150 minutes per week). Multivariate analysis was performed using crude and adjusted logistic regression ( p ≤ 0.05). Results: A total of 1,363 older adults participated in the study, of whom 428 tested positive for COVID-19 and were eligible for this study. The sample had a higher proportion of female older adults (67.01%), aged between 60 and 74 years (82.2%), re-siding in low-income areas (51.2%), and with up to 12 years of education (57.7%). There was a high prevalence of older adults exposed to insufficient physical activity levels (46.5%) and who reported one or more post COVID sequelae (65.0%). In the multivariate analysis, insufficiently active older adults were twice as likely to develop long COVID and three times as likely to manifest musculoskeletal sequelae, in addition to an 86.0% greater probability of mental sequelae and 56.0% greater probability of neurological se-quelae, when compared to their peers. Conclusions: The prevalence of long COVID in the sample studied was high and was associated with insufficient physical activity levels. The results highlight the need for health interventions aimed at preventing long COVID in older adults, with an emphasis on promoting physical activity.eng
