Abstract(s)
Abstract: This report was structured in two parts and it was elaborated as part of the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Music Education – saxophone and chamber music at the Superior School of Applied Arts (ESART) of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB), Portugal. The first part pertains to the Supervised Teaching Practice, which took place during the 2023–2024 academic year at the Professional School of the Castelo Branco Conservatory (EPCCB), in the saxophone class led by Professor Dr Carlos Jorge Canhoto Almeida. This section contextualises the institution where the Supervised Teaching Practice was conducted, presents a selection of lesson plans and corresponding reports on lessons taught and observed, and includes a reflection on the internship experience. The second part presents the research project, which focuses on qualitative research. The project aims to develop a guide of alternative methodologies for saxophone instruction, test the effectiveness of its application, and evaluate its utility in classroom settings, supervised study sessions, and individual practice. The topic was chosen based on the master’s student’s personal experience, both as a performer and as an educator, leading to the conviction that one of the greatest challenges in practice is the rapid adaptation of teaching materials to each student according to observed difficulties. After identifying the demonstrated challenges, the research process begins with a literature review to select and organise teaching materials into a single tool (Guide to Alternative Methodologies for Problem-Solving), ensuring the document’s accessibility for students. The first section contextualises the technical aspects to be considered in structuring the guide, as well as the conditions necessary for the successful development of a saxophonist. The second section includes a literature review of the topics to be addressed, along with the methodology used for the guide’s organisation, development, and implementation. The final section evaluates the outcomes of the guide’s application in two different contexts – its use in lessons, in supervised study sessions, and in individual practice. This evaluation involves the use of observation grids and surveys administered to the target population.
