ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze how the emotional intelligence (EI) promotes individual performance (IP), both directly and through the mediating role of affective commitment (AC). Using a questionnaire, a convenience sample has been collected, which was composed of 146 employees belonging to several organizations and correlations and linear regressions were used for data analysis. The results show the following: (1) EI is positively related with IP; (2) EI is positively related with AC; (3) AC is positively related with IP; (4) the relationship between EI and IP is mediated by AC. Despite the limitations of the study, empirical evidence suggests that emotionally intelligent individuals are more affectively committed and, consequently, perform better in organizations.
