Abstract(s)
Abstract: This internship report was written as part of the Master’s Degree in Music Education, specializing in Instrument (cello) and Ensemble Class at the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas of the Instituto Politécnico in Castelo Branco. The document is divided into two parts: -The first part characterizes the Supervised Teaching Practice, carried out at the Conservatory of Music and Arts of Lagos during the 2023/2024 academic year, with a second grade cello student and with a String Ensemble Class made up of two students between the third and sixth grade. -The second part focuses on the research project, having as chapter the following: “The impacts of thumb tensions on bow technique. The student’s first contact with the cello“. This chapter describes the topic of positioning the thumb of the right hand on the bow of the cello. The bowing technique is a vast world. It can be aproached in so many ways that sometimes, the position of the thumb of the right hand can be overlooked or addressed too briefly. If this happens, one of the consequences that can be caused is the appearance of pain or discomfort in (or around) the thumb. In this second chapter, the subject of the anatomy of the hand will be addressed, specifically the muscular and bone structure, with the main focus being the thumb area. Following that, the position of the thumb on the cello bow will be investigated. Once the literature review has been carried out, we will then proceed to present a questionnaire survay to students who are in the initial phase of learning to play the cello, as a way of acquiring information about their opinions regarding the most appropriate positioning of the thumb on the cello bow. The results will be analyzed and related to the literature review.
