Abstract(s)
envelhecimento significativo. Conforme evidenciado pelas projeções do Instituto
As equipas locais responsáveis
Abstract: This dissertation seeks to illuminate the essentiality of palliative care in alleviating the suffering experienced by patients, who face a wide range of medical conditions, from chronic illnesses to terminal stages. In the Portuguese context, this need becomes even more pertinent as the country faces significant aging. As evidenced by projections from the National Statistics Institute, it is expected that approximately 32% of the Portuguese population will be elderly by the year 2050. Given this scenario, it is crucial to ensure the widespread availability of palliative care, especially for the older population, who require continuous medical care and home assistance. The approach recommended by the World Health Organization, which highlights the importance of considering patients' individual preferences, including in relation to the location of end-of-life care, highlights the need for detailed planning in this sphere. Furthermore, it is essential to highlight the importance of effective planning for the protective development of palliative care. The local teams responsible for this care must establish and promote formal relationships among themselves, guiding not only the continuous training of the teams, but also the improvement of the quality of care offered to patients and their families. Furthermore, it is important to highlight the relevance of adequate patient referral as an essential component for improving healthcare and harmonious integration between the different sectors of healthcare. An efficient referral system is crucial to ensuring that patients receive appropriate care at all stages of their medical condition, from initial diagnosis to care provided in the home environment. In this way, this dissertation seeks not only to highlight the importance of palliative care in the sphere of Portuguese public health, but also to provide insights and recommendations for the development and improvement of these services, offering more comprehensive and compassionate assistance to patients facing challenging medical conditions. at different stages of their lives.
