Abstract: One of the current challenges of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is to propose learning activities capable of contributing to skills development and employability in the scope of an increasingly diverse and digital globalised world. The present study aims at identifying the intercultural communication skills acquired during an innovative pedagogical experience based on tele-collaboration, as well as at pinpointing the factors that may prevent an adequate development of these skills. This pedagogical approach was developed within a co-funded European Union Erasmus+ project, entitled INCOLLAB (Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching), available at https://incollabeu. wixsite.com/project). INCOLLAB aims to promote the activation and development of transversal skills in HEI students. A qualitative methodology was used, through a case study design in which 8 students from a Portuguese HEI and 4 students from a Chilean HEI collaborated in a collection of pre-designed task sequence online. Data were collected from focus groups discussions, which were interpreted through a phenomenological analysis technique. Results show that the online intercultural exchange carried out amongst students from both HEIs favours the acquisition of the necessary interpersonal skills to respond effectively to the challenges produced by the internationalization of production and employment. The study concludes by recommending the design and implementation of proposals based on tele-collaboration, due to its didactic potential in the development of student competencies, while highlighting the main prejudices and misunderstandings that can occur in this type of virtual online mobility experiences.
