Abstract: This study aims to understand older adults' perceptions of aging in rural areas through a case study in the Ermida and Figueiredo Parish Union. This research aimed to fulfill four objectives: to sociodemographically characterize the elderly residing in the Ermida and Figueiredo Parish Union, in the municipality of Sertã; to identify the needs of elderly individuals living in rural areas within this parish union; to analyze whether available resources meet the expectations and needs of these individuals; and to identify the main support networks available to older adults in the Ermida and Figueiredo Parish Union. The case study employed a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology, with a non-probability sample stratified by gender and five-year age groups, ensuring representativeness of the target population. The data collection instruments adopted were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. A total of 102 elderly individuals over the age of 65 who had lived in the Union of Parishes of Ermida and Figueiredo for more than a year were surveyed. Of these, 58 were female and 44 were male. Interviews were conducted with three institutional representatives with direct ties to the local community. The results reveal an aging population with low levels of education and income, marked by social isolation, mobility difficulties, and limited access to essential services. Based on the identified needs, an intervention project proposal was developed, focusing on proximity, mobility, and social participation, which seeks to address the main challenges identified in an integrated manner.
