ABSTRACT: Based on a theoretical and essayistic approach and supported by a critical exploration of specialized literature by renowned authors, this manuscript presents an epistemological framework that allows for a holistic reflection on the relevance of intercultural education and issues of identity. Therefore, it aims to contribute to the recognition of how intercultural education can contribute to the construction of inclusive educational practices in contexts of social and cultural diversity. The scientific article begins with a reflection on the current role of schools in the Portuguese context, proceeding to defend rigorous scientific knowledge in education. In a subsequent phase, it examines some of the most significant problems of contemporary reality, associated with issues of identity and interculturality, and their respective impact on educational processes. In a historical approach, the Axial Age is recognized as a particular moment in the history of our species, from which a description of the most striking characteristics of human nature emanated, particularly those that unite us, while also opening a space to illustrate those that separate us. The study then identifies, within the geography of the human planet, traits and frameworks of groups of people who inhabit their own social contexts, with associated norms and values. Finally, reference is made to issues concerning migratory movements, considering implications for educational systems. The conclusion is that intercultural education can be a powerful instrument of social transformation, based on the appreciation of diversity. To this end, it must act as a mediator between cultures, identities, and generations, integrating research, human values, and ethics.
