- Assessing the relationship between market orientation and business performance in the hotel industry: the mediating role of service qualityPublication . Sampaio, Carlos; Hernández-Mogollón, José Manuel; Rodrigues, Ricardo GouveiaPurpose This study aims to explore the nature of the relationship between market orientation and business performance in the Portuguese hotel industry and to evaluate the mediating role of service quality in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach A literature analysis on market orientation, service quality and hotel business performance was conducted. The structural model was developed, and the measurement scales’ items were generated. Working data were obtained by sending a survey to Portuguese hotel managers. A purification process was conducted, and the convergent and discriminant validity, as well the reliability, of the measurement models were assessed. The structural model was tested by conducting a path analysis, as well by evaluating the coefficient of determination (R2) and the predictive relevance indicator (Q2). Findings Research results show that market orientation has a positive direct effect on business performance. Moreover, results indicate that market orientation effects on business performance are mediated throughout the hotels’ ability to provide service quality. Originality/value Despite the large amount of research on market orientation, research on the hospitality sector has been conducted mainly using tools developed for the manufacturing and consumer goods sectors. On the other hand, little has been done to explore the nature of the mediating effect of service quality on the relationship between market orientation and business performance in the hotel industry. Moreover, despite the contribution of the tourism industry to the Portuguese gross domestic product, research on the hotel industry is scarce.
- Competitor orientation, pricing strategy, and business performancePublication . Sampaio, Carlos; Rodrigues, Ricardo Gouveia; Hernández-Mogollón, José ManuelThis study proposes to study the nature of the relationship between competitor orientation, a strategy based on low prices and hotel business performance, and to test if a low-price strategy plays a mediating role in the relationship between competitor orientation and business performance. A structural equation modeling approach is used, and a sample from the Italian hotel industry was used to evaluate the proposed hypotheses. Results show that competitor orientation is positively related to business performance and a strategy based on low prices. Furthermore, it is found that a low-price strategy has adverse effects on business performance. Additionally, the mediating role of the low-price strategy was not confirmed.
- Ensino do empreendedorismo : análise comparativa em universidades estado-unidenses, europeias e chinesasPublication . Cientes deste facto, as universidades têm vindo a delinear e a oferecer programas de ensino do empreendedorismo, através dos quais que se pretende desenvolver nos alunos competências, habilidades e conhecimentos necessários à criação de novas empresas, bem como, promover o seu espírito empreendedor. Este artigo visa analisar e descrever a importância do ensino do empreendedorismo, efectuando uma abordagem teórica sobre a temática. Paralelamente pretende identificar as vertentes do ensino do empreendedorismo, bem como analisar os problemas associados ao desenvolvimento de um currículo e as especificidades do processo de ensino/aprendizagem. Posteriormente, proceder-se-á a uma análise da situação nas universidades estado-unidenses, europeias e chinesas. O contributo deste artigo consiste em efectuar uma análise comparativa de três realidades muito distintas, atendendo aos níveis de implementação e de desenvolvimento de iniciativas em torno desta temática.
- Market orientation and hotel industry: developing a measurement modelPublication . Sampaio, Carlos; Hernández-Mogollón, José Manuel; Rodrigues, Ricardo GouveiaThis study seeks to fill a gap in market orientation literature about the hotel industry and deals with the construction of a market orientation scale tailored based on a sample obtained from the hotel industry in a multicultural context. The proposed model has three dimensions: intelligence generation, intelligence dissemination and coordinated response to the client, competition and market structure domains. Research results indicate that the scale has good psychometric indicators. Content validity was assessed by questioning a group of marketing experts across Western Europe. Working data indicates that the proposed model holds convergent and discriminant validity as well reliability.
