GÓMEZ GARCÍA, LUIS VICENTEThe pretérito perfeito composto (PPC) in Portuguese has been the subject of debate regarding whether the events it expresses must necessarily extend up to the movement of speech. Through a literature review, two main approaches are identified: those who consider the extension of the event to the moment of enunciation (ME) as part of the PPC’s semantics, and those who argue that its possible persistence is a pragmatic phenomenon. This distinction in key to the characterization of the PPC, its relationship with the pretérito perfeito simples (PPS), and its integration into the Portuguese verbal system. While diachronic studies have provided empirical evidence on the evolution of the PPC, there is a lack of analysis based on native speaker data that determine whether its extension to the ME is obligatory. Gómez Garcia’s (2015) thesis represents an exception, as it provides empirical data that help clarify the behavior of the PPC in relation to the persistence of events at the ME.
