Abstract(s)
ocorreu a seguinte distribuição: Inovadores (6,8%), Adotantes iniciais (23,9%), Maioria
enquanto a Maioria precoce e a Maioria tardia utiliza, sobretudo, o acesso via Campus
Virtual. A vantagem
digital b-on. A b-on é mais utilizada pelas Ciências Naturais e do Ambiente e pelas Ciências
Abstract: The Library of Online Knowledge known as b-on is a digital library that provides to the Portuguese institutions of higher education the access to the full-text of a high number of scientific publications, like peer review journals, e-books, and other types of documents that are indispensable to education and scientific research. B-on is available to all the members of Instituto Politécnico of Castelo Branco (IPCB), since 2004, but despite its characteristics the level of utilization by the members of IPCB is low. The main aim to of this research project is to study the use of b-on and other electronic information resources by the academic staff of the IPCB using the Everett Rogers Diffusion of Innovation Theory (TDI). The survey was conducted by applying a questionnaire to all members of IPCB academic staff and it was complemented by an interview with the IPCB librarians. 33,7% of valid answers were obtained and two librarian agreed to be interviewed. It was found that 94.2% know the b-on and 81.8% use it. Considering the categories of adopters of innovation proposed by Rogers following distribution was found: Innovators (6.8%), Early adopters (23.9%), Early majority (27.4%), Late majority (23.9%), Laggards (17,0%). It was found that Innovative are those who know and use b-on more often, and Laggards do not know and/or do not use the b-on. Innovators belong mostly to scientific areas of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Exact Sciences and Engineering. As for Laggards, these are located mainly in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities including Arts. Innovators and Early adopters indicated that they accede to b-on from any location with Internet access, while the Early majority and Late majority uses, above all, access via Campus Virtual. All the categories of adopters valued, above all, scientific articles with peer review. The relative advantage, the compatibility and the experimentation were the attributes that have strong impact in the adoption of b-on. Training it was considered by most respondents as very important in order to improve the capabilities of using b-on. Among those, 72.7% indicated the librarian as the person that can provide adequate training to the users, emerging as the changing agent. It was concluded that it is possible to apply the TDI to the study of the use of b-on. b-on is mostly used by the Natural and Environmental Sciences and the Physical Sciences and Engineering. It is necessary to promote more training about the b-on at IPCB with particular incidence among the academics of Social Sciences and Humanities including the Arts.
