  • Experimental study of the consequences of controlled atmosphere conservation environment on cherry characteristics
Publication . Andrade, L.P.; Nunes, José; Simões, M.P.; Morais, Diogo; Canavarro, M.C.C.; Espírito Santo, Christophe; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Silva, Pedro Dinho da; Resende, Mafalda; Caseiro, Catarina; Beato, Helena; Belane, Yuran; Ferreira, Dora
Cherry is a highly perishable fruit widely appreciated that is only commercialized during a short period. The post-harvest control and monitoring of this fruit is central and essential for optimal consumption in its highest state of quality. The conservation process aimed to inhibit the microbial propagation is usually accomplished by low temperatures and/or variable atmosphere composition. This paper describes experimental tests conducted in different refrigeration chambers located in industrial and laboratorial facilities. The latter one includes modified atmosphere and controlled atmosphere chambers. The tests were performed with four different concentration of O2 and CO2 in the controlled atmosphere chamber. Fruit samples extracted from each chamber were analyzed at specific residence times and several organoleptic characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the modified and controlled atmosphere maintain the fruit quality in terms of size, color, appearance and firmness, thus increasing their shelf life and food safety.
  • The reproductive effect of kidding : artificial insemination interval in goats
    Publication . Rodrigues, J.P. Várzea; Mascarenhas, R.; Sebastião, J.; Lopes, A.D.; Duarte, F.; Ferreira, Armando; Andrade, L.P.
Goat production in Portugal, even for milk, is based on indigenous breeds in extensive systems. Reproduction is based in April/May mating, with the kidding period in September/October. Artificial Insemination (AI) is a fundamental tool to implement breeding schemes for those breeds, which never had any improvement scheme, other than done empirically by the owner/shepherd. Te goal is to identify the necessary interval between kidding and oestrous synchronization or AI, in order to obtain acceptable reproductive parameters.

  • Effects of bovine somatotrophin (bST) on ovarian function in post-partum beef cows
    Publication . Andrade, L.P.; Rhind, S.M.; Wright, I.A.; McMillen, S.R.; Goddard, P.J.; Bramley, T.A.
The effects of bovine somatotrophin (bST) on ovarian follicle development and function and associated gonadotrophin profiles during the first nine weeks post partum were investigated in beef cows. Thirty-two cows (Shorthorn x Galloway) in moderately low body condition (BC) at calving were fed to maintain BC thereafter. At Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 post partum, animals were injected with 320 mg bovine somatotrophin (bST) (T, treated; n = 17) or with the carrier oil only (C, control; n = 15). Ovulation occurred in 4 of 17 T cows and 0 of 15 C cows (P = 0.10) by nine week post partum. Treatment with bST did not affect the numbers of small (3-8 mm in diameter) or large (> 8 mm in diameter) follicles or the granulosa cell populations but enhanced the oestradiol (P < 0.05) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) content (P < 0.01) of large follicles by nine weeks post partum. It did not significantly affect the testosterone concentrations of large follicles. Circulating concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and IGF-I were higher in T cows than in C cows (P < 0.001) but were unrelated to gonadotrophin profiles or gonadotrophin receptor concentrations in the follicles. At Week 8, plasma insulin concentrations were higher in T cows than in C cows both before (P < 0.05) and after (P < 0.05) glucose injection. It is concluded that GH may play an important role in mediating the effects of nutritional state on ovarian function during the post-partum period, possibly through alteration of intrafollicular IGF-I concentrations.

  • Nutritional characterization of honey from the Beira Baixa Region
Publication . Resende, Mafalda; Beato, Helena; Andrade, L.P.; Espírito Santo, Christophe
Honey is a natural, sweet viscous food produced by honeybees and other insects through regurgitation, enzymatic activity and water evaporation, to sustain the colony when flowers are not in season. Domestication of the Apis genera of the honeybees, lead Humans to better control the quality and the amount of honey production. Honey’s nutritional value is exceptional, due to the variety of carbohydrates, such as fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose and other polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. Additionally, honey is composed of multiple vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, acids, and enzymes. Honey’s biological activity is quite known and studied for high antioxidant content, and for bactericidal and antiviral action. Honey is one of the most important food products made in the Beira Baixa Region. Here, we show the nutritional value of the Honey produced in neighbour cities in Beira Baixa’s region: Oleiros, Castelo Branco and Vila Velha de Rodão; with special focus on the carbohydrate composition compared between the type of honey.
  • The effect of controlled atmosphere storage on fruit quality and postharvest performance of ‘Sweet Henry’ peach cultivar
Publication . Veloso, Abel; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Andrade, L.P.; Espírito Santo, Christophe; Resende, Mafalda; Silva, Pedro Dinho da; Teixeira, M.C.C.; Simões, M.P.
Peach is a highly perishable climacteric fruit. Cold storage is the most widely used method for peach storage, delaying fruit deterioration. This study describes the experimental tests developed to evaluate the evolution of peach characteristics under different storage conditions of controlled (CA) and normal atmosphere (NA) of ‘Sweet Henry’ cultivar. Tests were performed in refrigeration chambers in industrial and laboratory facilities, throughout 2years. In the controlled atmosphere chamber, the tests were performed with 3different concentrations of O2 and CO2, namely 3 treatments of controlled atmosphere (2% O2-5% CO2, 2% O2-10%CO2and 2% O2-15% CO2), 2treatments of normal atmosphere (at Research Centre and at FarmersOrganization facilities). From each treatment, peach samples were extracted and analyzed at 14, 21, 28, 35 (for all treatments) and at 42, 49, and 56 days(for controlled atmosphere). The analysis of the biometric parameters NDASHsize, weight, color, firmness, total soluble solids, acidity – were performed inorder to evaluate peach quality. In FO treatment, a weight loss of -13% in 2020 and -11% in 2021 was observed after 35 days. In NA treatment the maximum weight loss was -5% after 35 days of storage. A decrease of fruit firmness and acidity content was observed in all the treatments throughout time, but firmness remain globally similar between CA treatments. The CA treatments maintained the fruit quality in terms of weight, and firmness, thus increasing fruit market life. First chilling injury (CI) symptoms were observed at 35 + 2days of storage. The treatment 2% O2-15% CO2 allowed fruit firmness maintenance, the minimal decrease of acidity content and low CI incidence of Sweet Henry cultivar for a storage period of 56 days.
