  • Social innovation and social entrepreneurship : uncovering themes, trends, and discourse
Publication . Sampaio, Carlos; Sebastião, João Renato
The world is marked by persistent and recurring socio-economic and environmental changes. The domains of social innovation and social entrepreneurship have gained prominence as catalysts for positive change and societal resilience. Despite the substantial body of literature assessing social innovation and social entrepreneurship, most studies address these topics through analyses of scientific production output or through systematic literature reviews. Conversely, the main objective of this paper is to conduct a thematic analysis of the existing scientific literature on social innovation and social entrepreneurship, published across various geographical contexts, to assess themes, trends, and discourse within these fields worldwide. Therefore, it synthesizes, analyzes, and evaluates the evolving landscape of social innovation and social entrepreneurship research over time, employing a sliding windows methodology. This approach divides the analyzed period into distinct times to meticulously track changes in themes and discourse over time. To accomplish this objective, this paper examines the evolving thematic dynamics of social innovation and social entrepreneurship within the scientific literature, serving as a driver and compelling researchers and practitioners to explore new dimensions in social innovation and social entrepreneurship. Evidence from the analysis is discussed, including the main theoretical and practical implications and proposals for future research. This paper emphasizes the importance of adaptive and resilient approaches within the domains of social innovation and social entrepreneurship and contributes to a deeper understanding of how social innovation and social entrepreneurship evolve and adapt over time, shedding light on the transformative potential of social innovation and social entrepreneurship.

  • The influence of students’ perceptions and motivation on accounting and taxation careers
Publication . Sampaio, Carlos; Régio, Mónica; Sebastião, João Renato
Companies depend on the trust and confidence of the general public to thrive. The integrity of financial reporting practices plays a pivotal role in establishing and sustaining stakeholders’ confidence. This trust serves as a foundational cornerstone in managerial decision-making processes and in facilitating the active participation of a diverse spectrum of stakeholders within organizational frameworks. Despite its reputation for ethical and transparent conduct, the field of accounting often grapples with a perception of mundanity, particularly among student populations. This study uses a structural equation modeling approach to assess the impact of students’ perceptions of the accounting profession on their motivation in academic coursework, using a sample of 92 undergraduate students of accounting and taxation subjects. Additionally, it seeks to investigate how this motivation directly influences their perceptions of future career and how it operates indirectly through their active engagement in accounting and taxation courses. The research findings indicate that students’ perceptions of the accounting profession have a direct and positive effect on the perceptions of future career of individuals enrolled in both accounting and taxation courses. This influence is further mediated by the levels of motivation and engagement observed in the academic domain. Moreover, the results highlight the direct and positive influence of students’ motivation and engagement in their coursework on their perceptions of future career.
  • Tourism industry at times of crisis: a bibliometric approach and research agenda
Publication . Sampaio, Carlos; Farinha, Luís; Sebastião, João Renato; Fernandes, António Marques
Design/methodology/approach This study uses bibliometric methods and topic models, specifically latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) methods to evaluate the nature and course of the tourism crises and disasters scientific literature. Data from 2810 documents were retrieved from the Web of Science database and were used to perform the analysis. Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented global turmoil and a halt on international tourism. This study aims to evaluate the scientific literature about tourism crisis and disasters and depict how this research stream evolved in the face of economic, security, health, environmental, or trust crises, further providing insights about a research agenda on this stream. Findings Results show an increase of tourism crises and disasters scientific literature departing from 2010, and a surge in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, themes such as tourism competitiveness, tourism demand, crisis management, perceived risk, natural disasters, and destination recovery are among the most relevant themes in the research line, showing that the effect of economic and financial crises on tourism industry, sustainable tourism, and tourism demand are set to be among the most relevant in the upcoming years. Implications This study fills a void in tourism literature by providing a roadmap to understand the past, present, and future of the tourism crises and disasters research line and the avenues for future research in this field, including methods, in the period post COVID-19. Originality/value Previous studies on tourism crises and disasters were focused on literature review and on the relationship between crises and disasters and the tourism industry. This study uses a set of methods unused before in the research stream, namely a combination of bibliometric methods and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) methods, to provide a road map for the present state-of-the-art of tourism crises and disasters research and promising future research lines.

  • Beyond financial metrics: A systematic and bibliometric review of hotel business performance
Publication . Sampaio, Carlos; Régio, Mónica; Sebastião, João Renato
Hotel business performance has been traditionally measured through financial metrics. Nevertheless, recent research emphasizes the increasing relevance of non-financial metrics such as sustainability, stakeholder perceptions, and strategic management practices. This study assesses the evolution of the measurement of hotel business performance within the scientific literature to identify trends and theoretical frameworks that shape performance measurement. The methodological approach employs qualitative and quantitative analysis, through a bibliometric analysis, to track the development of performance metrics in the field. The findings suggest that the assessment of hotels’ business performance shifted from the use of pure financial metrics to a more integrated perspective, including factors such as social responsibility, customer satisfaction, and sustainability. Furthermore, external factors such as economic crises could also significantly influence hotel performance. Future research should further explore the role of technology and regional variations in shaping hotel business success.
