- Assessing Need Satisfaction and Frustration in Portuguese Exercise Instructors: scale validity, reliabity and invariance between genderPublication . Rodrigues, Celia F.; Neiva, Henrique; Marinho, Daniel; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Teixeira, Diogo S.; Cid, Luís; Monteiro, DiogoObjective: The aim of the present study was to validate the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale in Exercise for fitness instructors. Methods: Data from 477 exercise professionals (319 males, 158 females) was collected. Results: CFA supported the adapted and validated six-factor model: [χ2(237) = 1096.796, χ2/df= 4.63; B-S p < .001, CFI = .930, TLI = .918, SRMR= .0366, RMSEA = .079 (CI90% = .069, .089)], assessing satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs in Portuguese exercise professionals. Moreover, the analysis revealed acceptable composite reliability, and construct validity of the adapted version. Results revealed nomological validity, as well as invariance between male and female. No differences were found across latent means, and magnitude effects were trivial between gender. Conclusion: These results support the use of the adapted scale in exercise professionals, showing measurement invariance between gender. This scale is able to measure how exercise professionals experience satisfaction and frustration of basic needs when prescribing exercise to individuals in fitness context.
- Concurrent training intensities: a practical approach for program designPublication . Sousa, António; Neiva, Henrique; Izquierdo, Mikel; Alves, Ana Ruivo; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Ramalho, André; Mário, Marques; Marinho, DanielSports performance is influenced by the interaction of several physical variables. For this reason, most sports need both strength and endurance capacities to maximize overall performance. Therefore, a combination of resistance and aerobic training, usually called concurrent training (CT), has been used recently as a way of simultaneously improving strength and aerobic performances according to the needs of a specific sport. This combination can be challenging and can influence training adaptations, being a problematic issue for coaches. The main objective is to provide coaches with a practical proposal for CT to improve athletes' performance in different sports.
- Does the inclusion of ballistic exercises during warm-up enhance short distance running performance?Publication . Gil, Maria; Neiva, Henrique; Alves, Ana Ruivo; Sousa, António; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Marques, Mário; Marinho, DanielBACKGROUND: Warm-up is considered essential to optimize running performance, but little is known about the effect of specific warm-up tasks, specifically in the real competitive context. The current study aimed to verify the acute effects of a warm-up including ballistic exercises in 30m running performance. In addition, a second 30m trial was assessed to better understand the warm-up effects in training/competition. METHODS: Twenty-two men (19.32±1.43 years-old) randomly completed the time- trials on separate days and after a typical warm-up (WU), a WU complemented with ballistic exercises (post-activation potentiation - PAP) or no warm-up (NWU). Biomechanical, physiological and psychophysiological variables were assessed. RESULTS: The participants were 1.9% faster in the first 30m sprint after WU compared with NWU, mainly increased performance in the first 15m (p=0.03, ES=0.48). WU resulted in greater stride length in the last 15m of the first sprint. PAP did not differ from NWU and WU, despite eight participants performed better after this warm-up. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the positive effects of warm- up for sprinting, despite failed to evidence positive effects when ballistic exercises are included. In addition, the influence of warm-up in the running technique was highlighted by the changes in the running kinematics and a need for individualization of warm-up procedures.
- Editorial: Exploring motor imagery across the lifespan – gaps between practical applications and theoretical frameworksPublication . Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Bertollo, Maurizio; Ramalho, André; Marinho, DanielMotor imagery (MI), understood as the multisensory mental simulation of action, engages motor planning and higher-order cognitive networks, linking motor control with broader cognitive functions. Beyond simple rehearsal, MI reorganizes neural activity and supports the acquisition, refinement, and retention of motor skills throughout the lifespan. Its benefits have been demonstrated across rehabilitation, education, music, and sport (Bach et al., 2024; Hurst and Boe, 2022). When tailored to individual needs, MI protocols closely mirror physical training, serving as tools for optimization, adaptation, and recovery (Mendes et al., 2016). Yet despite its wide-ranging applications, key questions remain about how the quality of MI should be assessed, why its effectiveness varies across individuals and tasks, and how complex laboratory findings can be meaningfully translated into real-world contexts.
- Effect of siblings and type of delivery on the development of motor skills in the first 48 months of lifePublication . Rebelo, Miguel; Serrano, João; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Paulo, Rui; Marinho, DanielThis study aimed to verify whether the presence of siblings and the type of delivery had an influence on the motor skills development of children in the first 48 months of life. We developed a quantitative study with a sample of 405 children of both genders, divided according to the studied variables: children with siblings, children without siblings, children born via eutocic delivery, and children born via dystocic delivery. The instrument used in the study was the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2. Overall, the results indicated that children who had siblings had, on average, better outcomes regarding all motor skills (global and fine). Furthermore, those born via eutocic delivery, on average, had better outcomes regarding all motor skills (global and fine) when compared to children born via dystocic delivery. Thus, the presence of siblings in the family context and the type of delivery positively influenced motor development, especially after 24 months of age, showing that the presence of siblings providing cooperative activities through play and challenges improved cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Furthermore, a eutocic delivery, in addition to providing a better recovery from labor and the immediate a ective bond between mother and child, also led to better results in terms of global and fine motor skills.
- Effects of inclination in Farmer’s Carry: muscle properties and strengthPublication . Machado, Renato Costa; Louro, Hugo; Freitas, João; Batista, Marco; Marinho, Daniel; Conceição, AnaIntroduction: The farmer’s carry is a loaded‑carry exercise in which an individual walks a distance while holding heavy loads in each hand, requiring substantial grip strength, whole‑body stability, and coordinated lower‑limb force production. Objective: This study aimed to examine the acute effects of a light‑load inclined farmer’s carry protocol on grip strength, rectus femoris muscle mechanical properties, and lower‑limb asymmetries. Methodology: Twelve healthy young adults completed a continuous treadmill walk at 4 km/h while carrying two 10kg dumbbells, progressing through five incline stages (0–8%), each corresponding to 50 meters. Grip strength and muscle mechanical properties were recorded after each stage during a 1‑minute rest. Results: Significant grip strength reductions were observed in both hands, with decreases of 10.10% in the dominant side (p < 0.05, η²p = 0.61) and 8.50% in the non‑dominant side (p <0.05, η²p = 0.41). Also, a significant decrease in logarithmic decrement was detected in the dominant side (p = 0.04, W = 0.19). At baseline, 0, 2 and 6% were also observed significant differences between the dominant side and non-dominant side in logarithmic decrement. Conclusions: Overall, inclined farmer’s carry efforts primarily induced peripheral, grip‑specific fatigue, with minimal alterations in rectus femoris muscle mechanical properties, supporting the use of inclines to safely increase task difficulty without excessive mechanical stress.
