- Análise descritiva do tipo e incidência de lesão durante a pré-época de futsal em diferentes níveis competitivosPublication . A amostra estudada foi constituída por 68 atletas de futsal masculino do escalão sénior em Portugal. A recolha de dados foi realizada através de uma grelha de registo de lesões para identificar a parte do corpo afetada, a região anatómica, o tipo de lesão, o mecanismo e a gravidade. Verificou-se que o grupo elite apresentou a menor taxa de incidência de lesão (4.8 lesões por 1000 horas de exposição) comparativamente aos grupos sub elite (11.8 lesões por 1000 horas de exposição) e amador (13.9 lesões por 1000 horas de exposição). No entanto, foi no nível de elite que existiu maior percentagem de ocorrência de lesão durante a pré-época (38.5%), o membro inferior foi a parte do corpo mais afetada (30.8%) e as lesões ligamentares (23.1%) e musculares (15.4%) foram as mais prevalentes. O mecanismo de lesão mais frequente foi o não traumático (30.8%), e a maioria foram lesões moderadas no grupo elite (23.1%) e sub-elite (17.9%) e graves no grupo amador (12.5%). Os resultados evidenciam a importância de adoção de programas específicos de prevenção de lesões ligamentares e musculares durante a pré-época, independentemente do nível competitivo.
- Associations between body mass index, physical activity, perceived school competence, and academic performance in Portuguese elementary studentsPublication . Rebelo, Miguel; Serrano, João; Santos, Jorge; Marques, Catarina; Batista, Marco; Honório, SamuelBackground/Objectives: Childhood is a critical stage for consolidating health-related habits that shape physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. Regular physical activity has been linked to fitness and academic outcomes, while high body mass index (BMI) may hinder school performance. This study examined associations between BMI, perceived school competence, academic performance, and weekly physical activity volume in Portuguese elementary students, addressing a gap in national evidence compared with international studies. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted with 531 children (M = 9.13 years) from 10 public schools. BMI was calculated from anthropometric measures, weekly physical activity was self-reported, perceived competence was assessed with Harter’s Self-Concept Scale (Cronbach’s α = 0.797), and academic performance was obtained from school records. Analyses included Pearson correlations, ANOVA with Scheffé post hoc, and multiple regression, with exact significance values reported. Results: Higher BMI was negatively associated with perceived competence and academic achievement, while regular physical activity, particularly 4–6 h per week, was linked to better results in Portuguese and mathematics. Associations were modest (r = 0.18–0.32; R2 = 0.12). Regression showed physical activity (β = 0.093, p = 0.033) and perceived competence (β = 0.126, p = 0.004) predicted academic performance, whereas BMI was not (β = −0.028, p = 0.524). The near-zero correlation with environmental studies suggests subject-specific influences. Conclusions: Adequate BMI and regular physical activity are associated with better academic performance. The role of perceived competence is theoretically inferred as a potential mediator, but not formally tested. Findings highlight the interplay of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors. Structured school-based activity programs of 4–6 h weekly may promote both health and learning.
- Body composition, strength and muscle power indices at the different competitive levels of FutsalPublication . Rebelo, Miguel; Marques, Catarina; Crisóstomo, Rute; Batista, Marco; Paulo, Rui; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Serrano, João; Honório, SamuelObjective: The aim was to verify the differences in physical condition (body composition, power and muscle strength) in futsal players from three competitive levels. Methodology: Sixty-eight (24.26 ± 4.63 years old) Portuguese futsal players participated in the study, divided into: elite, sub-elite and amateur. We used the bioimpedance, the countermovement jump and the isokinetic dynamometer to assess physical condition, and the Kruskal-Wallis test to compare variables between groups. Results: There were no differences in body composition between groups. Elite players had higher countermovement jump heights than amateur players (p < 0.001). There were significant differences in the isokinetic muscle strength of the knee flexors, with the elite players showing more strength than the amateur players (p = 0.047). Discussion: The results of the research should be contrasted with those of other research found in the literature. Conclusions: The elite players had higher physical condition parameters (more lower limb power and more flexor muscle strength) compared to the amateur players. We would point out that all groups had a high probability of lower limb muscle injury (H/Q ratio < 60%) at this stage of the sports season, alerting training professionals to the importance of individualised physical condition analysis.

Utilizámos a bioimpedância, o salto em contra-movimento e o dinamómetro isocinético para avaliar a condição física, e o teste de Kruskal-Wallis para comparar as variáveis entre grupos; Não houve diferenças na composição corporal entre os grupos. Os jogadores de elite apresentaram maiores alturas de salto do que os jogadores amadores (p<0,001). Houve diferenças significativas na força muscular isocinética dos flexores do joelho, sendo que os jogadores de elite apresentaram mais força que os amadores (p=0,047); Os jogadores de elite apresentaram parâmetros de condição física superiores (maior potência dos membros inferiores e maior força muscular dos flexores) em relação aos jogadores amadores. Salientamos que todos os grupos apresentaram uma elevada probabilidade de lesão muscular dos membros inferiores (rácio H/Q < 60%) nesta fase da época desportiva, alertando os profissionais do treino para a importância da análise individualizada da condição física.
- Descriptive analysis of injury types and incidence during futsal preseason across different competitive levelsPublication . Methods: The sample consisted of 68 senior male futsal players (24.26 ± 4.63 years). Data were collected using an injury recording grid that examined the affected body part, anatomical region, type of injury, mechanism, and severity. Results: It was found that the elite group has the lowest incidence rate of injury (4.8 injuries per 1,000 h of exposure) compared to the sub-elite (11.8 injuries per 1,000 h of exposure) and amateur groups (13.9 injuries per 1,000 h of exposure). However, at this level, there is the highest percentage of injury occurrence (38.5%), the lower limb was the most affected part of the body (30.8%), and ligament (23.1%) and muscle (15.4%) injuries are the most prevalent. The most frequent mechanism of injury was non-traumatic (30.8%), and the majority were moderate injuries in the elite (23.1%) and sub-elite (17.9%) groups and severe injuries in the amateur group (12.5%). Discussion: The amateur futsal players had the highest incidence of injury during the preseason period compared to the other competitive levels. Still, it was at the elite level where the highest percentage of injuries occurred, most of them nontraumatic and of ligament origin, primarily affecting the ankle region. The results highlight the importance of adopting specific injury prevention programs for ligament and muscle injuries during the preseason phase, regardless of the competitive level.
- Differences in the Development of Motor Skills in Portuguese Children Aged 12 Months after 3 Years of COVID-19 ConfinementPublication . Rebelo, Miguel; Paulo, Rui; Honório, Samuel; Petrica, João; Batista, Marco; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Marques, Catarina; Serrano, João(1) Background: The objective of the study was to verify the effects of COVID-19 confinement on motor skills through a longitudinal study in Portuguese children who were one year old at the beginning of the pandemic. (2) Methods: The sample consisted of 88 children of both sexes, in the pre-COVID-19 assessment, they were 13.31 ± 2.4 months old and in the post-COVID-19 assessment, the same children were already 49.31 ± 2.5 months old. Motor skills were assessed using the PDMS-2 scales. For the statistical analysis, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was used to test normality, and the Wilcoxon test was used to compare the results of the two assessments in the same sample. (3) Results:There were statistically significant differences in all motor skills assessed, with children presenting, on average, worse results in all global motor skills in the post-COVID-19 assessment, as opposed to fine motor skills, showing better results in the post-COVID-19 assessment. (4) Conclusions: These results show the negative impact of the pandemic on children evaluated with a special emphasis on global motor skills, with the majority demonstrating values considered below average for their age, noting that the pandemic protocols may have had serious consequences on children’s motor development, warning professionals who deal daily with children in these age groups about the importance of stimulating global motor skills.
- The effects of menstrual cycle phase on jumping performance in women's football players: a systematic reviewPublication . Marques, Catarina; Rebelo, Miguel; Serrano, João; Fonseca, Helder; Frontiers in Sports and Active LivingObjectives: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence on the influence of menstrual cycle (MC) phases on vertical jump performance (countermovement jump and squat jump height) in female football players. Design: The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (ID1035357). Methods: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus (EBSCO). Studies were included if they involved female football players, assessed vertical jump performance, and compared performance across MC phases. Methodological quality was assessed using a modified Downs & Black checklist for non-interventional studies. Results: Seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Substantial heterogeneity was observed regarding MC phase determination procedures, sample characteristics, and testing protocols. Although some studies reported higher vertical jump height values during the follicular or ovulatory phases, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusions: Current evidence is insufficient to determine whether MC phases influence vertical jump performance in female football players. Findings should be interpreted cautiously due to methodological limitations in MC phase determination and low statistical power. Future research should aim to standardize protocols, use objective hormonal verification, and recruit larger samples.
- Influence of sex, family structure, and access to technology on the motor development of children aged 24 to 48 monthsPublication . Rebelo, Miguel; Adrião, Rafael Filipe Caetano; Batista, Marco; Mesquita, Helena; Marques, Catarina; Serrano, João; Honório, SamuelBackground/Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the influence of sex, the presence of siblings, and the duration of exposure to technology on the development of gross and fine motor skills in children aged between 24 and 48 months, using the PDMS-2 battery as the assessment instrument. Methods: The sample comprised 193 children, distributed across three age groups: 24 months (N = 22), 36 months (N = 78), and 48 months (N = 93). The assessed skills included Postural Control, Locomotion, Object Manipulation, Fine Grasping, and Visual–Motor Integration, grouped into the domains of Gross Motor and Fine Motor development. Statistical analysis was conducted using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests, complemented by the epsilon squared (ε2) effect size measure. Results: The results revealed statistically significant differences between sexes, with girls demonstrating superior performance in Fine Motor and Visual–Motor Integration tasks, particularly at 36 and 48 months (p < 0.05; ε2 up to 0.22). The presence of siblings showed a positive impact only at 36 months, while the duration of exposure to technology did not present a significant association with motor performance at any age group. Conclusions: The Total Motor Quotient (TMQ) varied according to the variables analyzed, reinforcing the notion that motor development is multifactorial and sensitive to familial and social contexts. These findings highlight the importance of considering both environmental and biological factors when designing motor intervention strategies in early childhood.

O objetivo do estudo foi analisar prospectivamente a influência dos parâmetros da condição física inicial no desenvolvimento de lesão nos primeiros três meses da época desportiva em jogadores de futsal. Um total de 68 jogadores (24.26 ± 4.63 anos de idade) foram avaliados antes do início da época desportiva em relação a determinados parâmetros de condição física, como a composição corporal (bioimpedância), a potência dos membros inferiores (countermovement jump, CMJ) e a força muscular (dinamómetro isocinético). Os jogadores lesionados apresentaram um desempenho inicial significativamente pior no CMJ em comparação com os jogadores não lesionados (p < 0.001). Não se registaram diferenças significativas entre os grupos na composição corporal e na força muscular. Valores mais baixos de potência foram associados a um maior risco de lesão nos primeiros meses da época desportiva (OR = 0.92; IC 95% = 0.88 – 0.99). A potência muscular foi um preditor independente de lesões nos primeiros meses da época desportiva em jogadores de futsal, indicando que a melhoria da condição física em geral, nomeadamente, da potência muscular dos jogadores pode ajudar a reduzir o número de lesões.
- Neuromuscular characteristics of female futsal players: A systematic reviewPublication . Marques, Catarina; Rebelo, Miguel; Serrano, João; Fonseca, Helder; SportsBackground: This systematic review aimed to analyze and synthesize the available evidence on the neuromuscular profile of female futsal players. Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (CRD420251055503). PubMed, Scopus and SPORTDiscus databases were searched until May 2025. The eligibility criteria were defined using the PECOS strategy. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Downs and Black modified version. Results: Twenty-three studies were included, covering a total of 433 female players between the ages of 12 and 27. Muscle strength was assessed mainly using an isokinetic dynamometer, jumping ability using the countermovement jump and squat jump, sprinting using the 10 m, 20 m and 30 m tests and agility and change of direction (CoD) using the Illinois agility test. Elite players generally showed a better performance in agility and CoD tests compared to lower-level players. Conclusions: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the neuromuscular profile of female futsal players and highlights trends related to the competitive level. These findings may support evidence-based practices for performance evaluation, training and injury prevention. More studies are needed to standardize methods and understand differences between competitive levels.
