- Circular economy: Proposal for sustainable sneaker production in a small footwear companyPublication . Sanches, Regina Aparecida; Duarte, Adriana Yumi Sato; Mendes, Francisca D.; IPCB. ESARTAbstract: A solution for the destination of discarded textile scraps from clothing companies is textile shoddy. The process is known as textile recycling. The shoddy fibers are obtained from the processing of residual materials and reinserted into the textile chain to produce new fabrics through circular economy strategies. In this context, the main objective of this article is to present a proposal to produce sustainable sneakers for small footwear companies. To produce the yarns, shoddy fibers originating from garment scraps discarded by industries in the city of Ibitinga (SP, Brazil) were used. Textile materials discarded by the clothing manufacturers with a 100% polyester composition were selected; the fabric scraps were shredded and mixed with recycled polyester fibers (PET) to produce the yarns: 50% shoddy fibers / 50% recycled polyester from PET bottles. The yarns were produced on ring spinning frames and the uppers on rectilinear knitting machines. The produced articles showed that there is technical viability to produce seamless knitted uppers using shoddy fibers as raw materials.
- Emotional colour paletteof visually impaired individuals throughsense of touch in daily wear garmentsPublication . Sharma, Deepshikha; Pereira, Carla Costa; IPCB. ESARTThe sense of touch elicits various flows of thoughts and feelings unique to everyone specifi-cally for visually impaired individuals. It shows in different research that different emotions arise in response to touching various textures. This research paper attempts to delve intothe diverse emotional experiences of visually impaired individuals when they interact with different-coloured fabrics through tactile sen-sation. Despite their visual impairment, these individuals possess a keen sensory ability to discern textures of different types of fabrics in daily wear garments. This research is using user experience methodology and questionnaire method (5-point Likert scale tool) for the col-lection of the data. The primary focus lies on elucidating the emotional impact of design on the daily lives of visually impaired individuals. The author selects fabrics, including a 100% Viscose T-shirt in white and black, 100% poly-ester T shirt in beige and green, 100% cotton T-shirt in yellow and blue and 100% Linen casual wear shirt in white and each fabric cat-egory maintains consistent quality. The Plutchik Wheel of Emotions is using in this research to select emotions, specifically focusing on the 8 basic emotions. Memory, cultural associations, and individual preferences also significantly influence the emotional experiences in tactile fabric perception. The results indicate that the 100% linen casual wear shirt in white and black evokes the same loathing emotion, while the 100% cotton T-shirt in yellow elicits ecstasy, with blue prompting admiration. The 100% polyester T shirt in beige and green also induces ecstasy but the level of ecstasy is more in green. Additionally, the 100% viscose T-shirt in black and white triggers ecstasy, with the highest intensity ob-served in the white T-shirt. These findings give the emphasize and connection between tactile sensation, fabric properties, and emotional responses in visually impaired individuals.

- Everyday design products and long-term memory : the colour influence on emotional response and perceived usabilityPublication . Paschoarelli, Luis Carlos; Silva, Fernando Moreira da; Silva, Jonhatan M.N.Colour is an important component of product design and can influence usage interaction. This study aimed to study the influence of the colour of everyday products on the emotional response and perceived usability of senior adult females. Thirty women between 60 and 80 years old participated, who evaluated clay sausage roaster in three different colours, based on two protocols: Emotional Response Cards (ERC) and Perceived Usability Cards (PUC). The product in the “Terracotta” colour was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) better evaluated (emotional response and perceived usability) than the products in the other colours (“green” and “grey”). The colour “Terracotta” was decisive in confirming that the memory factor of long-term experiences contributed to the results achieved. The application of colours in the design ofproducts aimed at older users must consider long-termexperiences and be treated as an inclusivity factor
- Experimental learning in cultural heritage: Pedagogical insights from the blended intensive program (BIP) "Castelo Branco: a timeless tapestry of memory and emotion"Publication . Naik, Neel; Marcelo, Ana Sofia; Reis, Carlos Domingues dos; Marcos, Isabel; IPCB. ESARTThe Blended Intensive Program (BIP) “Castelo Branco: A Timeless Tapestry of Memory and Emotion” was developed as a pilot pedagogical model, which integrated web-based preparatory, and intensive and practical training implemented in heritage environments. Targeted at the students who are studying cultural and visual studies, the pro-ject was to promote the direct and physical interaction with the tangible and intangible heritage of the city. Through the combination of quantitative and qualitative data, the current study examines the way in which artistic and conceptual understanding of cultural heritage developed among partici-pants through the interdisciplinary coop-eration, reflective practice, and immersion to the historical environment of Castelo Branco. Results indicate that the experi-ential approach significantly increased the representational and interpretative abilities of students, and the modality of blended delivery increased the accessibility and readiness. Furthermore, the incorporation of artistic inquiry in the heritage education promoted the participants to render historical stories in creative forms that would intersect between academic analysis and social participation. This research therefore indicates that experiential learning, which is based on interdisciplinary exchange, enhances critical thinking, development of cultural awareness and emotion attachment to place. The findings suggest that BIP-type hybrid models can be useful prototypes of introducing art-based and heritage centred pedagogy in higher education, thus, becoming part of sustainable practice in cultural education and preservation.
- Graphic design - a means of communication through symbolsPublication .
- The new millenium: The beginning of the Portuguese ev industry from an industrial design perspective?Publication . Santos, RicardoThis study is grounded in the field of Industrial Design, examining how early electrification initiatives contributed to the development of automotive design capabilities in Portugal. It presents preliminary findings from postdoctoral research exploring the early stages of electrification in the Portuguese automotive industry during the beginning of the 21st century. It examines key initiatives such as the P3 Project, CEIIA (Centre for Excellence and Innovation in the Automotive Industry), and CEDP (Product Engineering and Development Centre), which aimed to position Portugal as a hub for niche small electric vehicles (SEVs) while developing local capabilities in product design, engineering, and R&D.Although this work stems from a broader postdoctoral investigation, it represents a preliminary academic study focused on the development of design capabilities within educational contexts. These capabilities are intended to be transferred to the industrial ecosystem through the integration of trained professionals, reinforcing the long-term in-novation capacity of the Portuguese mobility sector. The paper also highlights the challenges faced, such as systemic lock-in effects and insufficient national support, which hin-dered the full potential of these initiatives. Nonetheless, the legacy of these projects continues, notably through CEIIA’s role in developing multiple electric vehicles in recent years. This analysis concludes that the early 2000s marked the beginning of Portugal’s engagement with the EV indus-try, fostering the development of product design and engineering capabilities crucial for future advancements in electric mobility.
- Playground for practising design thinking: Training activities and toolkits for teaching problem framingPublication . Pei, Xue; Sgro, Leandro; IPCB. ESARTThis study employs the metaphor of a “playground” to investigate how effective learning environments, along with situated guides and tools, can support non-design students in engaging with the early phases of the design process, specifically design research and problem framing. Drawing upon theoretical frameworks and the authors’ practical experience in applying and teaching design thinking, the research presents a structured, yet flexible, toolkit designed to assist educators in facilitating design based learning for students with non-design backgrounds. The toolkit was developed and iteratively refined through an action research process conducted across three academic courses. Emphasising empathy, ambiguity navigation, and creative exploration, the toolkit aims to foster design mindsets and enhance students’ problem-framing capabilities. The findings include both practical outcomes, such as the toolkit and associated methods, and pedagogical insights relevant to educators and researchers implementing design thinking in non-design contexts. By examining the opportunities and challenges of transferring design thinking methodolo-gies and practices across disciplines, this study contributes to the broader discourse on design pedagogy and its role in non-design education contexts
